Turok Returns to Video Games (But Not How You’re Expecting)

Published

on

Turok has made his grand return to the world of video games, but in a way no one was expecting, as shown in the trailer for Turok: Escape from Lost Valley.

The trailer for the Pillow Pigs game introduces fans to a new version of Turok and his brother Andar. While they’ll still battle enemies like bears and dinosaurs, the game has a stylized design sensibility that borrows more from Minecraft than from any of Turok’s previous action-packed games.

As the trailer ends with Turok facing a Tyranosaurus rex, the game’s title logo appears, with the announcement that the game is now available, though it actually releases on July 25.

Though the character is probably more known for his original video game franchise, Turok actually got his start in comic books. Licensed to Dell Comics from Western Publishing and debuting in the former’s Four Color Comics #596 in 1954, the original versions of Turok and Andar were Native Americans from precolonial times who became trapped in a valley where dinosaurs were still alive.

After the original Turok: Son of Stone series ended in 1982, Turok was one of the star characters of Valiant Comics in 1992, before getting another retool when Acclaim Entertainment bought the company and renamed it Acclaim Comics. After a brief revival by Dark Horse Comics, Turok is currently licensed out to Dynamite Entertainment.

The original Turok video game series began in 1997 with the titles Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok: Battle of the Bionosaurs, and ran until 2008. An animated movie produced by Classic Media and starring Adam Beach as Turok titled Turok: Son of Stone was also released in 2008.

Turok: Escape from Lost Valley will be available for purchase on Steam on July 25, 2019.
