Southwest Airlines Partners With Nintendo For Summer Of Surprises With Nintendo Switch System And Super Mario Maker 2



Airline hosts gaming-themed flight with Super Mario Maker 2 challenge; Customers onboard surprised with Nintendo Switch systems; Southwest launches 30 days of giveaways.

DALLAS, July 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) is celebrating a summer of surprises with the ultimate travel companion: Nintendo Switch. The partnership will come to life for Southwest Customers and Nintendo fans through a variety of ways, including the Let’s Play Getaway 30 days of giveaways sweepstakes* for a chance for one lucky winner to win a Nintendo Switch system and a download code for the digital version of the Super Mario Maker 2 game each day between July 15 and August 13. The sweepstakes will culminate with one grand prize of roundtrip air travel for a winner and three guests, in addition to four Nintendo Switch systems and download codes for the digital version of the Super Mario Maker 2 game.

The partnership kicked off today for Customers on Southwest Flight 2246 from Dallas to San Diego, a city that is hosting one of the biggest comic convention weekends. Customers were surprised with a Nintendo-themed gaming flight as Southwest and Nintendo representatives onboard provided them with the opportunity to play a custom air travel-themed Super Mario Maker 2 course, called the Southwest Super Sky Challenge. Everyone onboard who played the game was entered for a chance to win a $500 Southwest® gift card and a Nintendo Switch prize pack containing a Nintendo Switch system and a download code for a digital version of the Super Mario Maker 2 game, with one lucky winner being selected prior to the flight landing.

Each of the Customers onboard the 737-700 aircraft was then awarded a Nintendo Switch system and a download code for the digital version of the Super Mario Maker 2 game to enjoy during their travels and on future flights. Celebrating Global Gaming Citizens at The Game Awards 2019

Last December, Facebook Gaming and The Game Awards celebrated a group of Global Gaming Citizens — people who use the power of games to create positive change in their communities. This past June at E3, we welcomed two new Global Gaming Citizens, Vanessa Gill of Social Cypher Games and Damon Packwood of Gameheads. Social Cypher Games helps autistic children learn social skills through gaming while Gameheads provides youth with game development training. Today at The Game Awards in Los Angeles, we’re honored to introduce the newest members of Global Gaming Citizens.
To share their extraordinary stories with the rest of the world, Facebook Gaming and The Game Awards teamed up with Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky, the Sundance-Award winning directors of Indie Game: the Movie, to produce a series of powerful segments. Fereshteh Forough is the founder & CEO of Code To Inspire, the first coding and game design school for women in Afghanistan. CTI is a two-year after-school program that has given more than 150 female students skills and confidence to code, build apps, and generate work opportunities for themselves.The women at CTI have made over 20 games and have helped influence their community with their latest title, Afghan Hero Girl. Fereshteh was born in Iran as a refugee during the USSR invasion in Afghanistan. She would go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Herat University and later a master’s degree from the Technical University of Berlin in Germany.

Damon Packwood is Co-Founder and Executive Director of Gameheads. Based in Oakland, Gameheads is a youth non-profit training low-income and first-generation students ages 15–24 in video game design and development to prepare them for careers in the entertainment and tech industries.

Inspired by his family’s story, Luke, 12, created a game within Roblox to raise awareness around mental health. The game, Let’s Be Well, was designed to help kids understand mental health and to spark conversations about depression and other issues.

Vanessa Gill is CEO of Social Cipher. Social Cipher is a story-driven video game that gives children with autism a safe, fun, and accessible space to apply social skills.

Stephen Machuga and Mat Bergendahl, Stack Up

Stephen “Shanghai Six” Machuga is CEO & founder of Stack Up, a charity devoted to helping active military and veterans’ mental health through games and gaming culture. A former Military Intelligence Officer and Airborne Ranger, Captain Machuga left the service in 2006 and spent the following decade working as a counter-terrorism analyst and supporting various charities. Eventually, he came to focus on charity work full time with Stack Up.

Mat Bergendahl is a veteran, licensed counselling therapist, and the manager of the Stack Up Overwatch program (StOP), a crisis support line that connects veterans with volunteers trained to assist with PTSD, depression, and other emotional stressors. Supported by the CDC, the innovative program is saving lives and meeting veterans in need where they hang out—online and playing games.
